Subscribing to StockCharts

Overview

While it is possible to use many of our charting tools for free with limited functionality, joining StockCharts as a member will allow you to unlock all of our most powerful tools, features and expert commentary.

Here are some examples of the limitations that exist for Free users but not for members:

  • Free users can only create charts based on Daily and Weekly data bars, with a maximum of 5 years of data.
  • Free users cannot create charts with more than three technical indicators and/or overlays.
  • Free users cannot create and save annotated charts for later review.
  • Free users cannot create and run custom technical scans and alerts.
  • Free users cannot read market commentary from John Murphy, Arthur Hill or Martin Pring's premium columns.

Becoming a StockCharts member lifts those restrictions and more, opening up to the full functionality of our charting tools and giving you complete access to our technical experts.

We offer several different membership options, including three different service levels and multiple data plans. These options give you the flexibility to tailor your StockCharts membership to your specific needs. Check out the video below or read on to learn more about our Service Levels, Data Plans, renewal options and pricing.

Membership Options

It is important to understand that a StockCharts.com account consists of two different components - the Service Level and one or more Data Plans (i.e. exchange fees).

Our Service Levels

The Service Level is the combination of tools and services that StockCharts provides. Things like ChartLists, Technical Scans, Annotations, Market Commentary, Larger Charts, etc. are all features of your Service Level.

Each of our Service Levels represent a collection of features and options bundled together. We currently have three Service Levels available to our subscribers:

  • Basic - our budget Service Level, which allows you to create larger charts than free users and to save your charts to your account (up to 1000 charts in 1 ChartList). Basic members can also create and run one custom technical scan and up to 3 alerts in order to try out these key site features.
  • Extra - our most-popular Service Level, which includes all the features of Basic, but with more saved chart storage (250 ChartLists, each with up to 1000 charts) and the ability to create and run many more custom technical scans and alerts than Basic users.
  • Pro - our premier Service Level, with much more capacity than our Extra service. Pro members can save charts in up to 500 ChartLists, plus create even more scans and alerts than Extra members. In addition, Pro users have faster auto-refresh, access to historical data and more.

For those who are newcomers to StockCharts, we recommend our Extra service as it contains all of our key features, including technical scans and alerts. Note that you can always upgrade or downgrade your Service Level at any time. See the Using Your StockCharts Account page for more information on making changes to your Service Level.

With any of our Service Levels, you can choose to subscribe on either a monthly or annual basis. Our monthly renewal option is similar to most other web-based subscription services: you pay for one month of service at a time and your account will renew automatically at the end of each billing month. With our annual renewal option, you prepay for 12 months of service and we'll give you the 13th month for free!

For pricing and more detailed information on the differences between the Service Levels, check out our Service Level Matrix.

Our Data Plans

A Data Plan provides data for ticker symbols from a particular country. Regardless of Service Level, all StockCharts accounts come standard with our Free Data Plan, which uses BATS real-time data for the US and delayed data for all other markets.

However, the delayed data for non-US markets will be delayed by at least 15 minutes. Additionally, BATS US real-time data, while real-time, has its own limitations. For these reasons, you may wish to customize your account by adding official real-time Data Plans for one or more of the stock exchanges we support.

Learn More: BATS Real-Time Data

Prices for the different Data Plans may vary as they reflect the fees charged by each exchange for your use of their real-time data. StockCharts has no control over these fees and passes any Data Plan fees you pay directly on to the appropriate exchanges.

Since these fees are controlled by the exchanges, Data Plan fees are billed separately from your Service Level subscription and are always billed on a monthly basis, even if you have chosen an annual renewal cycle for your Service Level. Data Plans renew automatically at the end of each billing month. All Data Plan charges are nonrefundable.

You can add or remove Data Plans from your account at any time. If you choose to remove a Data Plan, the change will take effect at the end of the billing month.

For pricing and more detailed information on the Data Plans available, check out our Service Level Matrix.

Customizing Your Account Options

By combining a Service Level with various combinations of Data Plans, you can create a StockCharts account that is custom-tailored to your needs. Here are some examples:

  • A US-based investor who is just learning about the markets can select our Extra Service Level with our free BATS-based US real-time data. Later, they can upgrade to the official US real-time Data Plan as their needs expand.
  • An active Canada-based investor might choose to combine a Pro Service Level account with real-time TSX data and our free BATS-based US real-time data.
  • A UK-based investor may choose to have real-time UK data combined with free delayed data from Canada and free BATS-based real-time data from the US.

Remember, the total cost of your StockCharts.com subscription is a combination of the cost of the Service Level and the cost of whichever combination of Data Plans you select.

Becoming a Subscriber

There are several links on our website that can be used to sign up for our subscription service, including the “Sign Up” link found in the upper right corner of all of our web pages.

We offer a 1-month free trial to all new subscribers. After completing the signup process, we welcome you to upgrade and/or downgrade your StockCharts account to try each of our different Service Levels during your free month. You can also change your renewal cycle (monthly or annual).

In addition, you can add real-time Data Plans during the free trial; however, since these fees go directly to the exchange, we cannot offer a free trial of the real-time Data Plans. Instead, your credit card will be charged a prorated amount for the Data Plan, based on the number of days left in your free trial.

For step-by-step instructions on changing your Service Level, renewal cycle and Data Plan options, check out our Using Your StockCharts Account page in the Support Center.

At any time during the trial period, you can cancel by clicking on your name or the person icon located in the top right corner of any page, choosing “Your Account” and then clicking the “Cancel Your Account” button. Your cancellation will take effect at the end of the trial period.

If you have not canceled during your trial, then, at the end of the trial period, we will charge your credit card based on your most recently selected Service Level, renewal cycle and Data Plan options.

For more information on credit card charges and our billing process in general, please see our Using Your StockCharts Account page in the Support Center.

Note: The Free Trial Period is only available to new subscribers. It is not available to returning subscribers.
