We now provide free real-time charts as an alternative to the fee-based real-time data that ExtraRT subscribers get. Free users, Basic members and Extra members now see free real-time charts instead of the 20-minute delayed charts they used to receive.

It is important to understand that there are some significant differences between free real-time data and "real real-time" data however:

The "real real-time" data that ExtraRT subscribers see comes directly from the NYSE, Nasdaq, or TSX stock exchanges. It is the "official" data for a particular stock. If you place a typical trade order with your broker, they will execute the trade using those prices.

The "free real-time" data that appears on our non-ExtraRT charts comes from the BATS exchange. The data is often very similar to the "official" data from the major exchanges, but there can be small differences in prices. The volume information that the BATS exchange provides is much, much lower than the volume data from the major exchanges.

Because "free real-time" data is different from the "official" data, we highlight it in yellow on our charts. Real real-time data is highlighted in green.

We only display "free real-time" data for 20 minutes on our charts, After that, we replace the "free real-time" bar(s) with delayed "official" bars from the major exchanges. For 1-minute and 5-minute charts, we place a vertical, dashed yellow line on the chart to show where the free real-time bars end and the official bars begin.

We do not display volume information with the free real-time bars because the volume data from the BATS exchange is so much smaller than the official volume data. We also do not display any volume-based indicators in the "free real-time" section of the chart.

Not all stocks that we track have free real-time data available for them. There is no free real-time data currently available for Canadian stocks or for Pink Sheet stocks. Other thinly traded stocks will probably also not have BATS data either.

(Note: If you are an existing ExtraRT subscriber but would like to downgrade to our Extra service to save money, we will provide a form that will allow you to do that soon. Please check the "What's New" area of the homepage for an announcement when that form is ready.)

How do your Free Real-time Charts work?

Traditionally, candlesticks have not been different colors. If the close was less
than the open, you get a filled candlestick and if the close was higher
than the open, you get a hollow (white) candlestick. You can see this by
turning off the "Colored Prices" option in our SharpCharts tool.

Coloring candlesticks
is actually more complicated than you might first think and there
are several places where people can get confused. One thing that
can confuse people is that there is no such thing as a white candlestick
                - it is hollow, not white. That means that if you are viewing
a candlestick chart with volume bars behind it (the default for
SharpCharts), you may see a colored volume bar showing through
a hollow candle. If you find that confusing, select "Separate"
from the "Volume" dropdown just below the chart.

The next thing to keep in mind is that when the market is open, we add
another candlestick on the right side of the chart based on the current
intraday quote. Because that candle is still in the process of developing,
we draw it on top of a yellow background. The yellow background will
disappear when the final closing prices are recorded. (Note: The final candle will be green if you are a real-time subscriber.)

Finally, if you enable the "Colored Prices" option for a SharpChart,
here are the rules that we use:

If the previous day's closing value is less than or equal to
the closing value for the current day, draw the current day's
candlestick in black.

If the previous day's closing value is
more than the closing value for the current day, draw the current day's
candlestick in red.

Notice that these rules are subtly different from the rules for
determining whether to draw a filled candlestick or a hollow candlestick.
Those rules (stated in the first paragraph above) rely on the relationship
of the opening price for the current day to the closing price of the
current day. These subtle differences can lead to what I call "oxymoronic"
candlesticks -- candles that are colored bullishly, but filled bearishly
(i.e., a filled, black candle) or vice versa (i.e., a hollow red
candle).

For example, in the GE chart above, notice that filled, black
candlesticks appear at several important peaks on the chart. They happened
because GE opened significantly higher than the previous day's close
("gapped up"),
fell during the day, yet managed to still close above the previous
day's close. Less obviously, on May 23rd, a hollow red candle appears
because GE gapped down on the open, rose during the day, but didn't
close above the closing price for May 22nd.

Creating and running scans successfully takes time to learn. We can provide help with that, however we cannot write scans for people from scratch due to the possible misunderstandings that could arise. The reason behind this rule is if we misinterpreted your request and sent you a different scan and you used that scan to make trading decisions, you wouldn't be happy about the results.

The good news is that we provide TONS of resources for helping you create and run your own scans. We encourage everyone to take some time and really learn what scanning is all about.

We strongly recommend that people begin by using our Standard Scan workbench. You can find complete instructions for using that workbench here.

In addition, we've created an easy-to-follow tutorial about writing scans that you can find here.

Finally, our Scan Hall-of-Fame page also contains some good examples that you should study and understand before trying to create your own scans.

Remember - ultimately you are the one that decides what to do with your money. It is well worth your time to really learn how each scan works.

Please review the information at the links above and try to create the scan you have in mind. If you get stuck, just send us the scan criteria you've come up with at that point and we'll try to provide guidance.

StockCharts.com does not provide true streaming charts at this time
however we do provide auto-refreshing charts to members of our Extra
service. With "auto-refreshing" charts you have most of the benefits of streaming charts without all the hassles.

Many people confuse the concepts of "streaming" charts and
"auto-refreshing" charts. Streaming charts are interactive charts that
are created by special software that runs inside the user's computer using data from
a custom datafeed.

Auto-refreshing charts are charts created by a web
server that automatically get updated after a specified period of time.
Auto-refreshing charts provide most of the benefits of streaming charts
without the need for special software or a custom datafeed.

In general, you can create scans based on any of the indicators and
overlays that you can place on our SharpCharts. There are some
exceptions however. You cannot use the following SharpCharts features
in a scan:

Ratio Charts - Scans only work on one ticker symbol at a time.

Zig-Zag Based Features - Zig-Zag, Zig-Zag w/Retracements, and Price Labels.

Rabbitt Q-Rank - See the RabbittAnalytics.com website for more info.

Price-By-Volume - its value depends on the starting date of the chart on which it appears.

Renko, Kagi and 3-Line-Break Charts - the scan engine only works with bar, candlestick and P&F data

Ichimoku Charts - maybe some day

Like all of our commodity indices, our $GOLD symbol is not technically
a gold price at all. It is an index value that corresponds to a
theoretical, non-tradable "continuous" contract for gold that uses a
weighted average of all the currently open gold contracts. It is
provided on an end-of-day basis so that users can compare gold's mid-
to long-term performance and trends to other markets. It should not be
used to make trading decisions concerning gold itself.

Yes and No. Because of the vast amounts of data involved, all scanning systems work with datasets that are somewhat older than "real-time." When the market is open, our scan engines are continually
updating the final data point for all of the stocks and indexes
that they track on a rotating basis. When an Extra member runs a scan
based on the "Last Intraday Update", the scan engines will use a final
daily data point that is anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes old depending on
when the scan is run.

There are several market breadth indices that we track that are often
viewed cumulatively instead of in "raw" form. For example, the NYSE
Advance-Decline index ($NYAD) is very "spikey" when charted directly however it
forms a smooth curve called the "NYSE Advance-Decline Line" when
plotted on a cumulative chart.

To create such a chart, select
"Cumulative" from the "Type" dropdown below the chart. Example

You can create a "Ratio" SharpChart where the main charting area

In SharpCharts, we offer the "Price" indicator that lets you add
another dataset to your charts. Simply add a "Price" indicator to your chart and
set its parameter field equal to the ratio of your chart's main ticker
symbol and the other ticker you want to compare it to.

For example, to create a Price Relative plot comparing IBM to the
S&P 500, just create an IBM chart and add the Price Indicator to it
with the parameter "IBM:$SPX".

By using the Price indicator instead of the old Price Relative one,
you gain a lot more flexibility including the ability to overlay
another indicator on top of it, the ability to plot it behind your main
chart, and the ability to add ratios for unrelated ticker symbols.

Note: Whenever you change the main ticker symbol for a chart, we
automatically change any ratio symbols for the chart that contain that
same symbol.

The Record High Percent Index is a market breadth indicator created
by dividing the number of 52-week highs for a given market by the sum
of the number of new highs and the number of new lows.

Record High Percent = New Highs / (New Highs + New Lows)

The values range between 0.0 and 1.0. A value of 0.0 means that there
were no new highs on that day. A value of 1.0 means that there were no
new lows on that day. A value of 0.5 means that the number of new highs
        and new lows were equal.

StockCharts.com computes and publishes three versions of the Record
High Percent Index - one for the NYSE ($RHNYA), one for the Nasdaq ($RHCOMPQ),
and one for the American Stock Exchange ($RHXAX).

More information on the Record High Percent Index is available in this ChartWatchers article.
