Helpful Resources

There are a bunch of places online that can usually answer your question faster than we can.  Please take a moment and review these online resources before sending us a support request:

  • Our Docs -
Yes, we have user manuals even though we are a website.  You can find them by clicking the "Documentation" link on the right.
  • Our Policies -
While we often will bend over backwards to help, sometimes people ask us about things that we are simply unable to provide.  A list of those things is in our "Policies" area along with explanations about why each policy exists.  Click on the "Policies" link on the right side of this page to review those items.

Extremely Frequently Asked Questions

Submitted Mar 08, 2009 in Announcements

Here are some of the very common questions that we see day after day.  Please help us help you by reading these questions before sending in a support request.  Thanks!

Do you provide real-time charts for US and Canadian stocks?

Yes. We provide real-time charts for all US and Canadian stocks and many indexes. Our "ExtraRT" service allows members to create charts from non-delayed intraday pricing information. When the markets are open, real-time SharpCharts have the right-most bar highlighted in green to indicate that they are drawn from non-delayed data.

Where can I find a list of all the market, breadth and sector indexes that you provide?

All of our index ticker symbols start with "$". We currently track over 900 different indexes in our database. Here is the list of all the indexes we provide.

I'm having trouble with your site. What should I try first?

The following steps usually fix many of the technical problems that we hear about from our users:

  1. Make sure that you have enabled support for cookies from our site. [Directions for Internet Explorer, Firefox]  You can use our Cookie Tester page to verify your settings.
  2. If you have any Internet or Privacy Filters installed, make sure that you have added "stockcharts.com" to the "Allowed Sites" lists for those programs.
  3. Make sure that you have configured any pop-up ad blocking software so that it allows pop-ups from "stockcharts.com".
  4. Clear your browser's temporary file cache completely. [Directions]
  5. Restart your computer.

A whole host of problems can be solved by following those steps. If that doesn't fix your problem try search our FAQ area using the Search box on the right.

Do you provide charts of commodities or futures?

No. We do not have access to that kind of data. We hope to add it at some point in the future, but the commodity exchanges charge very high exchange fees.

We do provide end-of-day charts of certain commodity indexes.  Those charts are based on the non-tradeable "continuous" contract for each commodity.  They are designed to help equity traders understand the mid- and long-term directions of various commodities for help with making decisions about trading equities.  They are not intended for use in actual futures trading.

Which stock markets do you cover?

We provide charts for all US stocks that trade on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and the Nasdaq National Market. We cover most of the stocks on the Nasdaq Small Cap and OTC exchanges. We cover all of the major US Mutual Funds. We cover Canadian stocks on the TSX and CDNX exchanges. We do not have data for Canadian Mutual Funds at this time.

You don't have the stock/index/fund that I'm looking for. Can you add it?

Probably. We track over 33,000 different ticker symbols and we add up to 200 new ones every day. If you need to see a chart for a stock or fund that we don't have, use our Symbol Request form to let us know. Please keep in mind the following restrictions:

  1. We currently track US stocks, indexes, and mutual funds that are listed on the three major US exchanges - NYSE, Amex and Nasdaq.
  2. We also track Canadian stocks and indexes that are listed on the TSX. We do not have access to Canadian Mutual Fund data.
  3. We add market indexes if our data vendor can provide them for us reliably.  We already provide all currency and commodity indexes that we are able to.
  4. We cannot add large numbers of symbols at once. Please limit your requests to symbols that are extremely important to your investing.
